FAQs
About Insight Interactive & Ownership
No, Heroes & Generals was originally developed by the Danish studio Reto-Moto and first released in 2016. Insight Interactive is not affiliated with Reto-Moto or any of its former owners.
Insight Interactive is an independent studio that owns the U.S. trademark for HEROES AND GENERALS™ (Serial No. 98720145, filed and registered under Zackery R. Oleson). Our goal is to revitalize and modernize the original concept, preserving what players loved while fixing the systems that held it back.
This is not “Heroes and Generals 2,” but a respectful revival built from the ground up under a new team and structure. Insight focuses on publishing, partnerships, and community rebuilding while collaborating with development studios to bring the Heroes & Generals experience into the modern era.
Insight Interactive secured the Heroes & Generals™ name through a new U.S. trademark application after the original developer, Reto-Moto, shut down and its previous trademarks expired.
The new mark HEROES AND GENERALS™ (U.S. Serial No. 98720145) was filed by Zackery R. Oleson, the founder of Insight Interactive, in August 2024 and received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in June 2025. A Statement of Use was filed in July 2025, officially placing the trademark in the final registration stage.
While the registration is technically pending final approval, this is a normal phase in the USPTO process. Insight’s legal right to use and protect the Heroes & Generals™ name in U.S. commerce is already established through its verified use in connection with game software.
In short, the name is secured and active under Insight Interactive’s ownership, with full registration imminent.
No, Insight Interactive does not own the original Heroes & Generals game code, servers, or art assets created by Reto-Moto. Those materials are most likely held by Endava, a technology company that acquired TLM Partners, which had previously acquired Reto-Moto’s remaining assets after the studio’s closure.
Because Insight Interactive owns the HEROES AND GENERALS™ trademark, not the original game’s files, we are legally free to develop a new version from scratch as long as all code, art, and assets are newly created and no copyrighted material from Reto-Moto’s original game is reused.
Here’s how that works:
● Copyright protects specific assets (like code, textures, or music), which are likely to remain with Endava, the company that now holds Reto-Moto’s former assets through its acquisition of TLM Partners.
● Trademark protects the brand name and its use in commerce, which is now owned by Insight Interactive under U.S. Serial No. 98720145.
● General concepts, like WWII-era uniforms, vehicles, and weapons, cannot be copyrighted because they’re based on real historical designs in the public domain.
That means while we can’t use Reto-Moto’s original files, we can legally recreate WWII-inspired content and rebuild Heroes & Generals™ with all-new assets, systems, and gameplay, staying faithful to the original experience while keeping everything 100% original and legally clean.
This is the official continuation of Heroes & Generals™, developed and published under Insight Interactive, the legal owner of the HEROES AND GENERALS™ trademark in the United States (U.S. Serial No. 98720145).
Insight Interactive’s revival is the only project operating under authorized trademark rights, representing the true next chapter of Heroes & Generals™. We are rebuilding the game from the ground up with new technology, ethical monetization, and modern infrastructure, designed for long-term sustainability and growth.
There is also an unofficial community revival often referred to as the Heroes & Generals Beta Revival Project or HnG Sunrise, run by fans through their Discord server.
That project is not affiliated with or licensed by Insight Interactive. It operates as a fan-led restoration, using original Reto-Moto code and assets from before the game’s shutdown in May 2023. Their efforts are community-driven and exist to preserve the classic experience.
To summarize:
● Insight Interactive’s version — The official revival, trademark-owned and rebuilt from scratch for modern systems.
● Heroes & Generals Beta Revival (HnG Sunrise) — An unofficial fan project running old versions of the game for preservation purposes through Discord
Unfortunately, no, the original Heroes & Generals player data, accounts, and servers are permanently offline. When TLM shut down operations in 2023, all official servers and account systems were decommissioned, and ownership of that data likely transferred through TLM Partners and later Endava plc, which now holds Reto-Moto’s former assets.
Insight Interactive does not have access to those files or systems, so it’s not possible to recover old accounts, stats, or purchases.
The new Heroes & Generals™ being developed under Insight Interactive will operate on entirely new servers and backend systems built from scratch. Everything from accounts to progression will start fresh under modern infrastructure designed for stability, scalability, and long-term support.
Development & Plans
The new Heroes & Generals™ from Insight Interactive is best described as a rebuild and modernization of the original concept, not a direct sequel, remake, or remaster.
We’re taking the core ideas that made the original great, large-scale World War II battles, combined arms warfare, and the strategic war map and rebuilding them from the ground up using new technology, new assets, and a sustainable long-term structure.
This isn’t HnG 2, and it’s not just a visual update of the original. It’s a full rebuild of Heroes & Generals™, built from the ground up with modern technology to preserve the original gameplay experience while addressing what held it back, including performance, balance, and long-term stability.
If you loved the original, this will feel like coming home, just rebuilt for today.
We’re rebuilding from scratch using Unreal Engine, not the original Retox engine that Reto-Moto developed.
The old Heroes & Generals code and engine remain proprietary to Reto-Moto’s successors (now likely held by Endava plc through its acquisition of TLM Partners). Because of that, Insight Interactive is creating a new foundation built on Unreal’s proven modern framework.
This means every system, graphics, gameplay, networking, and backend is being rebuilt for modern hardware, scalability, and long-term support.
Using Unreal allows us to capture the same combined-arms warfare that defined Heroes & Generals, but with the visual fidelity, stability, and flexibility expected today. It also opens the door for future mod support, cross-platform play, and community-driven features, all built on a modern, sustainable engine.
Our goal with the new Heroes & Generals™ is to modernize, rebalance, and rebuild the game around fair play, more historical authenticity, and long-term replayability, without losing what made the original special.
Here are some of the biggest planned changes:
1. True Faction Identity Weapons, vehicles, and equipment will now be fully faction-specific. That means no more cross-faction gear, no German soldiers using bazookas, etc. Each nation will have its own complete set of authentic WWII equipment, with new items added to fill missing roles so that balance and variety remain intact. With that said, the captured weapons mechanic will no longer be available.
2. Ethical Monetization The original HnG was often criticized for its pay-to-win structure. We’re replacing that with a player-first monetization model focused on cosmetics, customization, and optional boosts, not power advantages. Free-to-play players will have full access to core gameplay, progression, vehicles, and weapons without ever being forced to pay to compete.
3. The Real-Time Strategy (RTS) layer and War Map will stay true to the original vision, but we’re making targeted balance changes to make it fairer and more rewarding for all factions. The goal is to phase out the pay-to-win advantages that once came from resource spending or purchased generals, and to tighten the connection between battle outcomes and the overall war effort.
Each faction will still compete for control of Europe, but under a system that values strategy, coordination, and contribution, not just who can spend the most credits. Far down the line, we’re exploring a fourth playable faction to further stabilize the global war (purely a long-term concept at this stage).
4. Seasonal & Historical Events Inspired by games like War Thunder, we plan to host WWII-themed seasonal events featuring limited-time gear, uniforms, camos, and cosmetics tied to real historical campaigns. These events will celebrate the era’s history while keeping the game’s content cycle exciting and fresh.
Yes, Heroes & Generals™ will be free-to-play, just like before.
Yes, Heroes & Generals™ will still include microtransactions through a premium gold currency, but the system is being completely reworked for balance.
Buying the ribbon progression outright (as in the old version) will no longer be possible. Instead, players will progress naturally through play, with optional ways to speed things up, not skip them entirely.
There will be Veteran Accounts, which give increased XP and credit gain multipliers compared to standard accounts. Players can also use ribbon boosters, which stack with Veteran bonuses for faster progression.
The difference this time is that we’re redesigning progression to be less grindy and more rewarding, so the game feels cohesive and enjoyable, whether you’re free-to-play or premium.
At launch, Heroes & Generals™ is planned to release primarily on Steam, and to also bring it to the Epic Games Store shortly after.
In the long term, we hope to expand to console platforms, bringing Heroes & Generals™ to players on PlayStation and Xbox once the PC version is stable and feature-complete.
Our focus right now is delivering a smooth, polished PC experience first, then building outward from there.
Technically, development has already started. Many of the game’s core systems, including progression, weapons, vehicles, and the RTS layer, are already being fully documented. Concept art, design planning, and budgeting are also well underway to ensure everything is ready once full production begins.
As for early access, we don’t have a confirmed date yet. Our current goal is to launch a crowdfunding campaign in early to mid-2026, which will help fund the playable early-access build and bring the community directly into development.
Partnerships & Collaboration
Heroes & Generals™ is being led and published by Insight Interactive, with Zackery Oleson serving as the project’s producer and director.
Insight is building a hybrid production model: a small in-house core team managing design, creative direction, and publishing, while a partnered AA development studio handles large-scale production and dev work, including asset creation and design, programming, art, and multiplayer systems.
We’re currently in active discussions with multiple international studios, including AA-tier teams from Poland to Argentina, both regions known for their strong Unreal Engine talent and proven track records in FPS and large-scale war game development. Each studio under consideration brings experience with multiplayer networking, vehicle physics, and modern Unreal Engine pipelines, making them ideal partners for a game of this scale.
This structure allows Heroes & Generals™ to maintain the authentic design and community-driven vision of the original while gaining the production power and polish of modern mid-tier studios.
More details on our partner studio will be shared once contracts are finalized and development moves into full production, but trust that the team chosen will reflect Insight’s commitment to quality, transparency, and respect for the Heroes & Generals™ legacy.
Studios or developers interested in working with us can reach out through the “Partnerships” tab at the top of our website.
While studio outreach is preferred, we’re open to hearing from anyone who believes they can contribute to the future of Heroes & Generals™, whether that’s through development, design, art, or technical expertise.
Yes, absolutely. Community members who want to get involved can reach out through the Contacts or Partnerships tab located on the home page.
No, Insight Interactive has no connection or affiliation with any existing Heroes & Generals revival or fan-made project. Our work is completely independent and represents the official continuation of the Heroes & Generals™ brand under Insight Interactive.
Absolutely! We encourage community involvement and love hearing new ideas or feedback. Fans can share suggestions, concepts through our Contact section or by posting directly in the forums.
Legal & Copyright
This is the most common question we get, and yes, our project is completely legal.
Heroes & Generals™ is being developed under a legally registered U.S. trademark owned by Zackery Oleson / Insight Interactive (Serial No. 98720145). That gives us the exclusive right to use the Heroes & Generals™ name and branding in connection with new game software.
The game itself is being rebuilt entirely from scratch, with new code, new art, and new assets, ensuring there’s no reuse of copyrighted materials from the original Reto-Moto version.
It’s also important to note that historical works like WWII uniforms, vehicles, weapons, and insignia cannot be copyrighted. They’re part of the public domain, which means they can be freely recreated in new projects.
Any original elements unique to the old game, such as artwork, icons, or UI, are being redesigned and reinterpreted by Insight’s team. Even classic visuals like rank badges and faction symbols will be newly recreated to respect both the law and the legacy of the original.
In short: Heroes & Generals™ by Insight Interactive is a new, legal, and original production built to carry the name forward the right way.
The original Heroes & Generals intellectual property, including the old game’s code, art, and assets, is now owned by Endava plc, following their acquisition of TLM Partners, which had previously acquired Reto-Moto’s remaining assets after the studio closed.
Insight Interactive’s project is separate and independent, built entirely with new assets and systems under our own Heroes & Generals™ trademark.
No, there’s no legal basis for that. We’re not using or replicating any of Endava’s assets, code, or proprietary IP from the original game.
Insight Interactive’s version of Heroes & Generals™ is being built entirely from scratch under our own registered U.S. trademark, making it a completely independent and lawful project.
Community & Communication
You can stay up to date by signing up for our email newsletter on the website. It’s the best way to get official news, development updates, and announcements about Heroes & Generals™ as progress continues.
Signing up for our email newsletter is the best way to get involved. Subscribers will be the first to know when early testing and beta sign-ups are announced, and being on the list will give you a better chance at securing a spot once testing begins.
Not yet, we don’t currently have an official Discord server.
Right now, you can join the discussion on our official forums here on the website. There’s also an active Reddit community and the unofficial Heroes & Generals: Sunrise Discord, but those are not run by Insight Interactive.
Our forums will serve as the main hub for official news, feedback, and community interaction moving forward.
Future & Vision
Our long-term plan is to keep Heroes & Generals™ alive, growing, and supported for years to come.
Once rebuilt, the focus will be on maintaining a stable, long-term live service, with regular events, updates, and community-driven improvements. We plan to host seasonal and historical events, deliver ongoing balance patches and bug fixes, and keep communication open through our forums and newsletter.
The goal is to build an active, self-sustaining community, where the game continues to evolve alongside its players, not fade away after launch.
That’s the hope, but it’s still early. Right now, our full focus is on rebuilding Heroes & Generals™ the right way.
In the future, we’d love for Insight Interactive to find its niche in reviving and modernizing once-great games, giving them a second life with new technology and fair, player-focused design.
Addressing Concerns & Legitimacy
No, absolutely not. Heroes & Generals™ is being developed legally under a registered U.S. trademark (Serial No. 98720145) owned by Insight Interactive. We’re not taking donations, selling early access, or collecting money of any kind right now.
Once crowdfunding does launch, every dollar raised will be clearly tracked and accounted for, showing where and when funds are used, from studio payments and asset production to server costs and community management.
Players will always be able to verify progress and spending directly through our website and official updates, ensuring full financial transparency every step of the way.
Yes. We plan to use reputable crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo or Kickstarter, with clear goals and public updates.
Every dollar raised will be tied to specific production milestones, studio partnership, prototype, early access testing, and will never be taken before real progress is shown.
Supporters will get frequent development updates, open communication, and full transparency on how funds are used.
We understand the skepticism; many players have seen “revival” projects or flashy crowdfunding campaigns turn out to be fake, rushed, or abandoned. Games like “The Day Before” and several Kickstarter-backed “revivals” promised everything, showed nothing real, and vanished once money changed hands.
That’s not what this is.
Interactive’s Heroes & Generals™ revival is built on verified legal ownership, not borrowed files or empty promises. The Heroes & Generals™ trademark (U.S. Serial No. 98720145) is officially registered, giving us full rights to use the name and publish new software under it.
We’re not launching a campaign with concept art or ideas; no crowdfunding will begin until a confirmed studio partnership is publicly announced and development is officially underway. Once that happens, every dollar raised will be fully transparent, with detailed breakdowns of how funds are used and when.
Unlike fan revivals that rely on hype, this is a legitimate production built in Unreal Engine, managed by an incorporated studio, and structured for long-term growth and accountability.
This isn’t a “trust us” project, it’s a “see it happen” project.
