About Insight Interactive & Ownership
No. Heroes & Generals was originally developed by the Danish studio Reto-Moto. Insight Interactive is not affiliated with Reto-Moto or the original development team.
Insight Interactive is an independent publishing and production effort organizing a clean Unreal Engine rebuild of the Heroes & Generals experience. The project is being built from the ground up with new code, new assets, modern systems, and a partner-led development model.
Insight’s role is to define the vision, coordinate production, build development partnerships, guide the project’s public direction, and pursue the trademark rights associated with the HEROES AND GENERALS name.
This is not “Heroes & Generals 2” or a continuation made by the original studio. It is a new production effort designed to preserve the core identity of Heroes & Generals on a modern foundation.
After the former U.S. trademark registrations for HEROES & GENERALS became inactive, Zackery Oleson independently identified the opportunity through the USPTO and began pursuing a new U.S. trademark application for the name.
The application process is separate from ownership of the original game’s code, artwork, servers, and other copyrighted materials. Insight’s trademark efforts concern the HEROES AND GENERALS name and its intended use with a newly developed game.
The trademark process is ongoing, so Insight does not represent the mark as fully registered until the USPTO process is complete.
No. Insight Interactive does not own or use the original Heroes & Generals source code, Retox engine, servers, artwork, models, audio, or other proprietary game assets.
The project is being rebuilt independently in Unreal Engine using new code, new artwork, new models, new audio, and newly developed systems.
Insight’s trademark efforts concern the HEROES AND GENERALS name and branding. They do not provide ownership of the original game’s copyrighted materials.
Insight Interactive is creating a clean, ground-up rebuild rather than modifying or redistributing the original game.
The project uses new code, new artwork, new models, new audio, and newly developed systems in Unreal Engine. The original Retox engine, source code, textures, models, audio, and other proprietary game files are not being reused.
The rebuild draws from the broader Heroes & Generals gameplay identity and historically grounded World War II weapons, vehicles, equipment, and factions while creating its own implementation and production assets. Insight’s trademark efforts concern use of the HEROES AND GENERALS name and branding; they do not provide ownership of the original game’s copyrighted materials.
This approach allows the project to pursue a recognizable Heroes & Generals experience while maintaining a separate, independently created technical and artistic foundation.
No. Insight Interactive is an independent publishing and production effort and is not affiliated with the original developers of Heroes & Generals.
Insight is developing a clean Unreal Engine rebuild of the Heroes & Generals experience using new code, new assets, and a new technical foundation. The project is being organized under Insight’s own production direction, supported by its U.S. trademark efforts surrounding the HEROES AND GENERALS name.
Insight is also separate from community-operated restoration projects such as HnG Sunrise. Those projects focus on restoring access to versions of the original game, while Insight is pursuing a ground-up modern rebuild with a defined development path toward a playable vertical slice and future production.
We respect the work of community projects, but there is no development, ownership, or operational affiliation between them and Insight Interactive.
No. Insight Interactive does not have access to the original Heroes & Generals player accounts, progression data, purchases, servers, or backend systems.
The rebuild will use entirely new infrastructure, accounts, servers, and progression systems created for the new version. Players should expect to begin fresh rather than recover their original accounts, statistics, purchases, or unlocks.
This clean start also allows the project to build a more stable, scalable, and modern foundation from the ground up.
Development & Plans
Insight Interactive’s Heroes & Generals is best described as a clean rebuild of the original experience, not a direct sequel, remaster, or reuse of the old game.
The project is being built from the ground up in Unreal Engine with new code, new assets, and modern systems. The goal is to preserve the core Heroes & Generals identity, including large-scale World War II combined-arms gameplay, faction warfare, vehicles, strategic war-map direction, and its recognizable art and asset style.
This is not “Heroes & Generals 2,” and it is not simply a visual update. It is a new technical and production foundation designed to carry the Heroes & Generals experience forward while improving stability, progression, balance, presentation, and long-term support.
Heroes & Generals is being rebuilt from scratch in Unreal Engine rather than using the original Retox engine.
The project is being developed with new code, new assets, new systems, and a modern technical foundation. The original game’s code, engine, and assets are not being reused.
This clean rebuild gives Insight Interactive the flexibility to preserve the combined arms identity, art direction, and atmosphere of Heroes & Generals while improving stability, scalability, presentation, and long-term support.
The biggest change is the foundation itself. Heroes & Generals is being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine with new code, new assets, and modern production systems.
The current direction includes:
Stronger faction identity
Captured weapons will not be part of the standard progression system. Weapons, vehicles, uniforms, and equipment will remain faction-specific, and any new additions will have clear historical ties to that nation. Additional equipment may also be introduced where needed to fill
capability gaps that existed in the original game.
More logical progression
Progression should be easier to understand, less grind-heavy, and structured in a way that makes more sense. Unlock paths for weapons, vehicles, equipment, and roles will be reviewed so players progress through systems in a more natural and consistent order.
Reduced pay-to-win pressure
Veteran Accounts, gold currency, and boosters are expected to return, but spending should not determine combat effectiveness or strategic success. This is especially important in the RTS war-map layer, where the original system could heavily influence which factions had access to resources and create major competitive imbalances.
A fairer RTS war-map layer
The strategic war should reward coordination, battlefield contribution, and faction planning rather than purchasing power. The connection between individual battles, resource availability, and the larger war effort will be reviewed and improved.
Updated visuals with the original identity intact
The rebuild will use modern technology, new assets, and improved visual quality while preserving the recognizable art direction, atmosphere, and overall visual identity of Heroes & Generals.
Modern user experience and quality-of-life improvements
The rebuild will include updated interfaces, onboarding, accessibility options, clearer systems, and other improvements expected from a modern online game.
These plans will continue to evolve through development, testing, and community feedback.
Yes. The current plan is for Heroes & Generals to remain free-to-play.
The goal is to support the game through optional purchases such as Veteran Accounts, gold currency, and progression boosters without making payment necessary to compete or enjoy the core experience.
Final monetization details will be defined later in development, but free access remains part of the current vision.
Yes. Heroes & Generals is expected to include optional purchases such as Veteran Accounts, gold currency, and progression boosters as part of a sustainable, player respectful monetization model.
These systems are intended to support faster progression and convenience without providing unfair combat advantages or allowing players to bypass progression entirely. A major goal is to reduce pay-to-win pressure, especially within the RTS war map layer, where spending should not determine strategic control or faction success.
We also plan to make meaningful improvements to in-game progression so it feels less grind-heavy, more rewarding, and easier to understand, with progression paths that make more sense for both free and paying players.
The exact benefits, pricing, and structure of Veteran Accounts, gold, and boosters will be defined later in development.
PC is the current target platform for Heroes & Generals.
Stage 1 is focused on proving the game’s foundation in Unreal Engine and producing a playable vertical slice, not announcing storefronts or additional platforms.
Specific distribution platforms, console versions, and broader release plans will be evaluated later as production progresses.
Development is already underway through Stage 1: Foundation & Validation, planned across 2026–2027.
Stage 1 is focused on proving that Heroes & Generals can look and feel like Heroes & Generals in Unreal Engine before the project moves into full production. This includes prototyping, gameplay testing, art and asset direction, technical planning, partner outreach, and preparation for a playable vertical slice.
Stage 1 also includes a focused crowdfunding campaign intended to fund the official development partner and production of that vertical slice.
Stage 1 concludes when a playable vertical slice exists and the core Heroes & Generals identity has been demonstrated in Unreal Engine. This is not an Early Access or public alpha timeline.
Partnerships & Collaboration
Insight Interactive is leading the project’s vision, production direction, partnerships, and public development path, with Zackery Oleson serving as founder and producer.
The project currently uses a partner-led model. Individual Unreal Engine developers and specialists may be hired for focused assignments during Stage 1, while the longer-term goal is to partner with an experienced development studio capable of providing the broader multidisciplinary team needed to produce the playable vertical slice and support future production.
Insight is not presenting itself as a large internal development studio. Its role is to define the project clearly, coordinate the work, manage partnerships, protect the production direction, and ensure that each stage moves forward with appropriate scope and accountability.
The official development partner for the vertical slice has not yet been selected. Additional details will be shared once agreements are in place.

Future & Vision
The long-term goal is to build Heroes & Generals into a stable, sustainable online game that can grow over time.
That means continued support, regular updates, balance improvements, new content, technical maintenance, and ongoing communication with the community.
The project is being designed around a leaner production model and a modern technical foundation so future growth can be handled responsibly without repeating the structural problems that held the original game back.
The goal is not simply to relaunch Heroes & Generals, but to give it a durable foundation for long-term development and community support.
Yes. Heroes & Generals is the foundation Insight Interactive is being built on, but the long-term goal is to develop and publish additional ambitious online games.
Insight’s broader vision is to build projects through clean production, trusted partnerships, transparent development, and sustainable, player-respectful business models.
For now, the primary focus remains Heroes & Generals and building it on a strong modern foundation before expanding into additional projects.
Addressing Concerns & Legitimacy
The first crowdfunding campaign will have a defined purpose: funding the official development partner and production of a playable vertical slice.
Before the campaign launches, Insight Interactive intends to publish a clear scope, funding goal, budget categories, expected milestones, and known risks so supporters understand what their contributions are intended to accomplish.
Funds will be managed through an established crowdfunding platform and directed toward the work described in the campaign. Supporters will receive ongoing updates about production progress, major milestones, and meaningful changes to scope or schedule.
Crowdfunding always carries risk, so Insight will not present contributions as guaranteed purchases or promise outcomes that have not yet been demonstrated.
Insight Interactive is pursuing a structured, professional production path for Heroes & Generals.
The project is being rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine using new code, new assets, and a new technical foundation. Insight is responsible for organizing the vision, production direction, partnerships, funding path, and long-term development strategy.
The rebuild follows a defined process built around transparent development, experienced contractors and development partners, focused funding, and a playable vertical slice before broader production expands.
This differs from projects focused on restoring access to older versions of the original game. Insight’s goal is to preserve the core Heroes & Generals identity while building a modern foundation designed for long-term production, growth, and support.
Insight Interactive’s project is independent in its technology, production structure, funding, ownership, and development direction.
